Tips for Choosing Your Engagement Photo Outfits

Engagement sessions are seen by so many people as unnecessary and tacky but that’s B.S. and you’ve been looking at the wrong photographers. Engagement sessions are FUN, and romantic, and editorial, and full of your personality! Not to mention, this is the time to get all those uncomfy feelings you have about being in front of the camera out of your system and realize that “hey…this whole getting my photo taken isn’t as bad as I thought. I’m gonna be just fine on the wedding day”.

I cannot stress enough how important it is that you know how your wedding photographer works before the wedding day. We work with you to find the best angles, styles, and poses for each couple, that way, on the wedding day, we’ll have everything nailed down and everyone will know what to expect!

But its not just picking the right photographer, it’s about how you look & more importantly how you FEEL during your engagement session! And we know not everyone cares about clothes or even really knows where to start in choosing their engagement session outfit, so read on, friends!

Your Style

Your engagement photos feel like you and they should convey your personality and unique sense of style!

If you’re low-key, stick to more earthy tones and subtle patterns. If you’re super stylish, now’s the time to pull out that fun over the top outfit you’ve never had an excuse to wear yet! It’s important that you be yourself, so wear something reflects you, because if you wear something you normally wouldn’t (or have no desire to), you could feel very uncomfortable and it will show in the photos.

Molly loves an excuse to dress up in fun & fancy dresses but she’s also a collector of cool sneakers

Make it pop

You can still amp up your personal style by adding in pops of color and texture (seriously…I fricken love texture). Colors can be incorporated not just in the clothes you wear but your accessories, like a red bowtie or necklace, a green cardigan, or yellow heels. Some fun textures to add in are furs, ruffles, and lace.

You can also bring props to the shoot to add some fun elements! We’ve had couples bring tandem bikes, champagne to pop & sip, stylish sunglasses, bouquets, and their pets!

Want to take it to the next level? Consider renting a cool/vintage car.

Natasha & Mike love fun cars so they rented the Pink Figgy for some portraits

Details matter

Don’t forget the details! Adding some accessories gives us some fun things to play with; hats, jewelry, ties, fun shoes, etc. These can help make your images stand out!

Oh, and don’t forget to clean and iron your clothes the night before – wrinkly clothes just don’t look great. Its also a good idea to get a manicure (and pedicure if you’re wearing open toed shoes).

Hannah wore clear open toed shoes and you can see her pretty white manicured toes!

Where we shoot

Since we’re an on-location photography team (meaning we don’t own an indoor studio…the world is our oyster!) we can shoot anywhere! We always encourage our couples to think about locations that are unique or special to them, but if they get stuck, we suggest some of our favorite places.

So what do outfits have to do with your location? Literally everything! Your outfit should match the vibe of where you pick. For example, wearing cowboy boots & a hat can feel a touch out of place in NYC but they fit in perfectly if you’re doing your engagement photos in Jackson Hole, WY.
