Sara & Mike’s Candle Lit Cannon Green Wedding

Though they call Washington D.C. home, Sara & Mike went on their first trip together to Charleston for a work event for Mike at Cannon Green and that was when they thought “This would be an awesome place to get married!!!”.

Getting Ready

Sara & her bridesmaids had a very spacious suite at Belmond Charleston Place that was decked out in blues and whites, which happen to be Sara’s favorite colors and which also happen to be the wedding colors! I love when things come together like that.

Sara’s favorite detail of the day, and the most special, was her wedding dress that had a piece of her grandmother’s dress sewed in. Sara said her Nana was one of her best friends and she would have loved the wedding!

Mike and the boys were over at the Dewberry (a favorite of our midcentury loving hearts) and its also where we did their first look.

Portraits

Sara & Mike love the colorful historic homes that are in the historic district so after the First Look we piled them up in our car and headed to Rainbow Row to bring a smidge of color into the overcast day. Being a Saturday in October…it was busy. But you cant tell (-;

Ceremony

One unique twist that Sara said they definitely won’t forget was the decision to not get a tent over the open courtyard for the ceremony after looking at the weather. Fast forward to 30 minutes before the ceremony, and it is raining cats & dogs with no back up plan (oh and a partially ripped dress). However, just before guests were ready to sit the sun came out and the rain was gone for the night – it was so perfect!

The couple asked Sara’s brother to officiate the wedding and for them, that was the most memorable moment of the day. It meant the world to Mike & Sara to have her brother up there officiating them, making them feel more at ease. The couple also wrote their own vows!

After the ceremony we took a handful of portraits on the staircase inside Cannon Green before the couple went to cocktail hour. Mike’s family has a family veil that has been passed along to all the females on their wedding day for generations. The pictures go into a family book that contain photos of everyone who has worn the veil. Unfortunately, the veil clashed with Sara’s dress but we swapped out her original veil with it for a few special photos of with the old veil! It was such a sweet tradition.
