From Drinks to Golden Hour:
A Relaxed Approach to Engagement Photos
The best engagement sessions never feel rushed. They feel like the two of you are just hanging out (well, with me too), a little dressed up, a little playful, and with enough space in the evening to let some real magic unfold!
My favorite way to start an engagement session? Drinks! That can be coffee, cocktails, whatever fits you! When you’re able to sit down with something in your hands that feels natural, it takes the edge off immediately and helps the two of you settle into a storytelling mindset.
From there, all we really need to do is wander around one of your favorite locations together and by the time golden hour hits, you’re not thinking about photos anymore. You’re together. The light’s soft, the pace is easy, and I’m just there catching it.
That’s the point: engagement photos don’t need to feel like a photoshoot. But they should absolutely feel like you.
Ideas to Make Your Engagement Session Feel Relaxed
-
Kick it off with a drink (or coffee/gelato/whatever feels like you). Instant icebreaker, hands occupied, and you’re already in your element.
-
Turn it into a walk. Movement > posing. Cozy up together while you walk through streets, gardens, markets, wherever feels natural.
-
Bring some music. Have a tiny speaker in your bag with your favorite playlist playing low.
-
Pick a spot you actually love. Your go-to rooftop bar, your favorite beach, the neighborhood you always wander together. Comfort translates to the photos!
-
Dress like you’re on a date. Elevated but still you. If you’d wear it for dinner and cocktails, it’ll photograph beautifully.
-
Plan it around golden hour. I love midday light but gold hour lighting makes everything feel softer, warmer, more romantic which is the perfect way to end the shoot!
-
Work in something low-key you already do together. Making pottery, grabbing ice cream, riding bikes, playing with your dog…chose easy activities = easy photos.
-
Don’t overthink it! The less you treat it like “we’re on camera,” the more it feels like you’re just hanging out and that’s when the best photos happen!
The best photos come when you’re not even thinking about the photos. That’s exactly how I run engagement sessions: easy, relaxed, and full of real moments! Want that for yourself? Let’s talk!
