They got married at a bright yellow estate that looked like a vintage postcard with tropical flowers, candlelight, and DIY Grecian busts wearing seashells they’ve collected over the years. Not a beach wedding—but definitely giving coastal energy in the most personal way!
They’re big travelers (James proposed to Kathryn in London), and we photographed Kathryn’s sister’s wedding a few years back, so being invited back to take part in Kathryn & James’s day was so special. They didn’t want stiff poses or anything too polished—just the real stuff. The in-between glances. The emotional surprises. The actual experience of the day.

A Calm, Colorful Start Inside the Estate
The morning started with London-themed napkins, homemade scones from a family friend, and Kathryn going out of her way to make everyone feel spoiled—birthday cake for a bridesmaid levels of thoughtful. She handed out heart-shaped sunnies, Estelle champagne flutes in every color, and hotel-chic robes for lounging. And Kathryn loved the getting ready space! High ceilings, bold paint, and eclectic vintage furniture that looked straight out of a design magazine.
Kathryn originally planned to wear Kate Spade heels with tiny orange-shaped fruit for heels (does it get anymore Florida coded than that?), but made a last-minute switch to glittery Kate Spade sneakers—a move I fully support as someone who also wore glittery Kate Spade sneakers on her wedding day. After her mom and sister helped her into her gown, she shared a quiet first look with her dad that got everyone a little misty-eyed, myself included.
Meanwhile, James and his groomsmen kicked things off with a drink, then immediately devolved into tossing candy into each other’s mouths like teenage boys in tuxes. Honestly? Peak getting ready energy.
Proof That Rain Wont Ruin Your Wedding Portraits
Kathryn gave James a little butt pinch as his cue to turn around for their first look—iconic behavior, honestly, we fully support anything that has personality! The sky opened up right after, but she didn’t care. “Once I saw James,” she told me, “it all hit me. I felt so lucky, so happy, and everything else just faded.” Her advice for engaged couples are “Do the first look. We actually got to enjoy our wedding.”
For their outfits, they went black tie but with personality. Kathryn, who usually leans boho, picked a classic Anne Barge gown after asking herself, “Could this be in a royal wedding?” (throwback to that London engagement!) but she added a playful element with a giant bow on the back! James wore a sharp tux with a pink orchid boutonnière—fitting, since he grows orchids at home. We love a floral moment.
Portraits happened on the estate’s covered porches, thanks to the rain. The soft light, that yellow exterior, and two people fully obsessed with each other made it work. Their pup Talou made an appearance (in a tux collar, obviously), and the vibes were a perfect mix of playful and stylish. James got hoisted in the air like a human trophy, Kathryn’s bridesmaids looked amazing in mismatched blues, and the whole thing felt easy in the best way.
A Tearful Groom and Umbrellas at the Ready
Before the ceremony, everyone took a minute to reset. The girls were taking selfies and kissing Talou (the true star of the day), while the guys were—somehow—back to chucking candy and kissing… crystal balls?
James got emotional when Kathryn walked down the aisle, so if you’re wondering whether it “ruins the moment,” let this be your sign that feelings don’t follow a schedule.
During the ceremony, the tent was leaking, and one guest ended up right under the drip. He just laughed, popped open a clear umbrella, and took it like a pro. Jay and I unknowingly photographed the moment from opposite angles.
Kathryn and James both teared up reading their vows, and the second they were officially married, someone handed them drinks and they walked off with the biggest grins and very wet shoes.
Dried Oranges, Seashells, and the Sweetest Surprise on the Dance Floor
The reception was one of those spaces you just wanted to stay in all night—warm candlelight, bold colors, and little personal details tucked into every corner (but alas, the dance floor was calling!). There were Grecian busts wearing seashells Kathryn and James had collected over the years, dried orange slices guiding guests to their seats, and tropical florals that made the whole room feel alive.
Even the napkins had something to say—each one printed with a random fun fact about Kathryn and James, like little easter eggs for the guests! The cake was sunshine yellow and unapologetically cheerful. And along the antique mantels, they’d framed wedding portraits of their families from generations past!
And juuust when it felt like the night had given everyone enough, Kathryn stepped up and surprised her parents with a first dance of their own! They never had one at their wedding—and she made sure they finally got it.
