Playful & Stylish Portraits at Bethesda Terrace & Bow Bridge
Clearly there’s no shortage of engagement photo spots in NYC, but Central Park just hits different. It’s timeless, cinematic, and weirdly peaceful if you time it right. And for couples who want that “yes, this is New York” vibe without it feeling stiff or overdone, this is the best location.
I split my time as a Florida and NYC wedding photographer, so I get to work in a lot of beautiful places—but there’s something about Central Park that always delivers. Even with the crowds, the energy is magic.
We kept it simple with Abby + Russel , just a quiet Autumn morning, and two iconic spots—Bethesda Terrace and Bow Bridge. Bethesda is dramatic in the best way: layered stone, moody arches, light pouring in from the stairs. Bow Bridge brings a softer, romantic feel with that swooping shape and skyline peeking through the trees.
The outfits really pulled it all together: Abby started in a brown wool coat and plum pinstripe suit (with a Gucci scarf I still think about) but changed into a cream trench because it was an unseasnably warm morning. Russel wore a plum sweater and tailored pants—simple, flattering, not trying too hard. Their looks fit the park, which is half the secret to making your photos pop. Don’t try to outdo Central Park—just complement it.
Planning your own Central Park engagement photos?
Here’s what you’ll want to think about so you’re not sweating in the wrong season or swarmed by tourists at golden hour:
Where to shoot
Bethesda and Bow Bridge are crowd favorites for a reason. But The Mall? Gorgeous in spring. Wagner Cove? Hidden and romantic. The Reservoir? A skyline moment. We can stick with the classics or find a quieter corner that feels more “you.”
What to wear
Central Park is visually rich—stone arches, leafy pathways, skyline views—so your outfits should enhance, not compete. That doesn’t mean you have to play it safe though.
-
Love a bold fashion moment? Do it. We’re talking feathered cuffs, vintage coats, sequins at sunrise, or a pop of chartreuse if that’s your thing. Quirky works if it’s intentional.
-
Prefer classic neutrals? Think texture. Cream wool, structured blazers, layered knits. Simple doesn’t have to mean boring.
-
Into the whole ‘cozy but cool’ vibe? Tailored basics, great shoes, and a good coat will go a long way.
Whether you’re glam and editorial or offbeat and maximalist, the key is cohesion. Your outfits should feel like you—just turned up one notch.
Bonus tip: If one of you is going big, let the other balance with texture or color so you still feel like a pair. And yes, you can bring a second look. We’ll plan time for a quick change!
When to Go
Each season has its own charm, and Central Park is truly beautiful year-round.
-
Fall (Oct–Nov): Rich colors, cozy layers, engagement season vibes.
-
Winter (Dec–Feb): Moody and romantic—picture fresh snow, wool coats, and empty walkways.
-
Spring (Mar–May): Flowering trees and soft light. Everything feels a little more dreamy.
-
Summer (June–Aug): Lush greens, golden sun, and… yeah, it can get sweaty. But early mornings fix that.
Pro tip: early morning is your best friend. Not just for lighting, but for avoiding crowds and feeling like the park is yours. Even in November, by 8:00am the foot traffic picks up fast.
Planning Around the Session
Central Park is massive, so plan to build in some walk time between spots. I always recommend comfortable shoes (you can change!) and giving yourself a buffer after hair and makeup so nothing feels rushed.
If you’re not a local & staying in the city, a nearby hotel like The Plaza or The Wallace has great getting-ready light and adds a little luxe to the day. And if you’re making it a whole weekend celebration, grab coffee at Ralph’s before or after your shoot—it’s just a short walk away.
What makes Central Park sessions different with me?
I’m not showing up with a shot list and a timer. We’ll chat, wander, maybe grab coffee (Ralph’s is five minutes away and very photogenic itself), and shoot in a way that feels like a hangout—with beautiful photos to show for it. You’ll get a mix of relaxed portraits, candids, and those little moments in between that always end up being your favorites!
Whether you’re based in NYC or flying in for the weekend, we’ll make this session feel like a love letter to your relationship and the city.
Want engagement photos that actually feel like you?
Let’s plan a session in Central Park that’s polished but never forced, stylish but never stuffy, and way more fun than you thought photos could be! The best part is, Central Park is so…central! So we can start here and once it gets crowded, move onto to other spots in the city for a different look.

Central Park Engagement Session FAQ
Nope! For engagement sessions, you don’t need a permit as long as you’re not bringing large props, furniture, or commercial video gear.
Sunrise is the best time for light and low foot traffic. If sunrise isn’t an option, weekday mornings are your next best bet.
Yes! Dogs are allowed in most parts of the park, but they must be leashed. Just bring water and poop bags. (And maybe a friend to help wrangle.)
There are a few covered spots (like under Bethesda Terrace), but we’ll keep an eye on the weather. If needed, we can reschedule; flexibility is part of the plan! Personally, I think rainy photos are magical & romantic in their own way.
