A Beautiful Fall Wedding at Gibbes Museum, Charleston SC

A tented fall wedding at the Gibbes Museum with orange velvet couches, black chairs and fall toned wedding flowers

I’ve been a Charleston wedding photographer for over a decade now, and I’ll never get tired of shooting at the Gibbes Museum. It’s right in the heart of downtown, but feels like a tucked-away little gem—gallery walls, secret courtyard, all the charm you’d expect from Charleston with a bit of an edge. If you love bold design, layered fashion, and spaces that feel like art in themselves, the Gibbes is so your vibe.

Need help narrowing down your venue short list? I put together a full Charleston wedding venue guide with all my favorites—including why the Gibbes makes the cut every time.

The Gibbes Museum – A Historic Venue with Modern Vibes

Katherine and Michael were drawn to Gibbes Museum for its modern & elegant vibe. It’s like the museum effortlessly combines old and new in its exhibitions! They wanted their wedding design to do the same. The amazing venue gave them the perfect backdrop for their big day.

Getting Ready in Style

Before the ceremony, the couple both got ready at Hotel Emeline, a super cool mid-century modern hotel in Charleston. Their ceremony happened right inside the Gibbes Museum’s rotunda, surrounded by beautiful artwork that added a special touch to their day.

A Stylish Couple’s Wedding Day in Charleston

Katherine looked absolutely stunning in her Anne Barge gown, and she added a touch of sentimental value by wearing blue drop earrings borrowed from her mom! Her white Jimmy Choo shoes with T-Swift approved bejeweled straps completed her look. Michael was equally dapper in a custom black suit, a velvet bowtie, velvet loafers, cool silver knot cufflinks, and a white Brackish Bowtie feather pocket square. The whole wedding party looked sharp in black, with the bridesmaids rocking different dress styles.

Breaking the Southern Mold

Even though they live in North Carolina, Katherine and Michael didn’t consider themselves your typical “Southern” couple. They wanted a wedding venue that matched their more city-loving personalities. The Gibbes Museum, with its classic charm and modern appeal, was a perfect fit!

The Little Touches That Wow-ed Everyone

Katherine and Michael made sure their wedding was filled with little touches that made it extra special. There were custom menus, comfy orange velvet couches, and cocktails named after their dogs! For the ceremony, they had these see-through “ghost” chairs that looked pretty cool and modern. They also had super fancy custom letterpress stationery designed by Love and Lighting. And guess what? There was even a vintage phone where guests could leave sweet messages – everyone was lined up to leave one for them!

They couldn’t have pulled it off without YOJ Events, their awesome wedding planner and designer. They got their rentals from Mayker Events, Curated Events, BBJ La Tavola, and the stunning fall-themed flowers were done by Tupelo Honey Flower Shop.

Katherine added a fun twist by changing into a short dress, and Michael’s best man surprised him with matching sneakers for some dance-floor action!

Your Gibbes Museum Wedding

Thinking about having your wedding at Gibbes Museum? Here are some common questions:

1. Can I have both my ceremony and reception at Gibbes Museum?

Absolutely! You can have both your ceremony and reception at this awesome spot, making it super convenient for you and your guests. Usually ceremonies are held in the rotunda with the reception under a tent on the lawn, but you can absolutely have your ceremony outdoors on the lawn as well.

2. How many guests can the venue hold?

Gibbes Museum can host different-sized guest lists, so whether you’re having an intimate gathering or a big celebration, it’s got you covered.

3. Can I add outdoor elements to my wedding?

Even though the museum itself is indoors, you can work with your planner and florist to bring some outdoor vibes inside, creating a seamless transition from indoors to outdoors!

Katherine and Michael’s fall wedding at Gibbes Museum proves that when your unique style meets a historic yet modern venue, magic happens. If you’re dreaming of a wedding that combines natural elegance with city flair, Gibbes Museum could be your dream venue too!
